Janie comes back from the funeral of her husband Tea Cake. Everyone is mad at her for marrying someone younger than herself. The townspeople are throwing lots of insults about how she acts too young. I think that this could possibly be a flash forward because this doesn't seem to be going anywhere and there are flash forwards at the begining of many books.

Ravi Chandra is an Indian man who works at a power plant and is craving riches. In order to get money, he accepted a deal to blow up a power plant for lots of money. He goes in and places a C4 explosive that is supposed to have a ten minute countdown, but right when he flips the switch it blows up causing him to vaporize. There is a giant cloud of radiation all over, so chaos breaks loose.

The Three Sisters- Esperanza meets three fortune tellers who read her hand and tell her she is going to be very succesful. They tell her that when she leaves she has to come back to Mango street.

A House of My Own- Esperanza describes the house that she wants- not an apartment or a basement; A real house.

Mango Says Goodbye Sometimes- Esperanza talks about when she is going to leave Mango the man she is using a metaphor to represent the street. This is the last chapter.

Sally- Sally is a girl who apparently is very pretty. All of the boys like her, but her dad doesn't let her hang out with them.

Bums in the Attic- Esperanza says if she has a big house she will let bums live in the attic.

The Monkey Garden- Sally goes and kisses boys in the monkey garden. Esperanza tries to save her, but she didn't want to be

Red Clowns- Sally goes off with a boy instead of coming to meet Esperanza at the Carnival near the red clowns like she said.

Linoleum Roses- Sally gets married, but her husband isn't very nice, and he controls her too much.

Geraldo No Last Name- Esperanza talks about how Marin always goes to dances and once she danced with a guy who got killed shortly after their dancing. 

Edna's Ruthie- The only adult that Esperanza likes is Ruthie, who is Edna's Daughter. Ruthie really likes book, and also Ruthie could move to a nice home somewhere else, but she doesn't. 

Sire- Sire is a kid around the street who really scares Esperanza. She talks about his girlfriend and about what they do together.

Papa Who Wakes up Tired in the Dark - Esperanzas Dad comes in and tells her that her Grandma is dead.

Born Bad - Esperanza tells about her aunt, who was very sick, and Esperanza says she is bad because she imitated her aunt on the day that she died.

Elenita, Cards, Palms, and Water - Esperanza goes to get her fortune told in hope that she will have a house. The only thing that Elenita sees is a house in the heart though. Esperanza is pretty dissapointed that she paid five dollars for this.

Meme Ortiz; Louie, His Cousin & His Other Cousin; Marin; There was an old women who had so many kids she didn't know what to do; Alicia who sees mice; Darius and the clouds- All of these chapters were introducing new characters into the story. Some were kind of wired like Louie's cousin, but others were Esperanza's friends.

The First Job- Esperanza gets a job. She is very nervous, but it is an easy job, so she is happy about that. She meets a man who is nice, but the he kisses her.
